An assistive device is any item, piece of equipment, or product system (whether acquired commercially, modified, or customized) used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. This broad category includes personal assistive devices like hearing aids or canes, as well as complex systems. The goal of these devices is to compensate for an injury or impairment to replace a physical function and promote independence in children affected by birth injuries.
