Brain injury in newborns is damage to the brain that occurs before, during, or shortly after birth. In newborns, this is often associated with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), which results from lack of oxygen and blood flow, as well as trauma, stroke, or infection. These injuries can lead to permanent neurological conditions, including cerebral palsy and cognitive impairments. Neuroimaging such as MRI is often used to assess the extent of white or gray matter injury and help determine appropriate treatment and support.
