Down Syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21 (Trisomy 21). It is associated with mild to moderate intellectual disability, characteristic physical features (such as low muscle tone and an upward slant to the eyes), and an increased risk for certain medical issues like congenital heart defects. It is the most common chromosomal condition diagnosed in the United States and requires ongoing medical monitoring and developmental support.
