Forceps delivery is a type of assisted vaginal delivery where a doctor uses an instrument shaped like a pair of large spoons (forceps) to grasp the baby’s head and guide it out of the birth canal. This procedure is typically performed when labor has stalled or the baby is in distress and needs to be delivered quickly. Use of forceps requires specific safety criteria to be met to avoid injury to the infant or mother, and improper use can result in birth trauma.
