Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a form of high blood sugar (glucose intolerance) that is first identified during pregnancy. It occurs when the mother’s body cannot make enough insulin during pregnancy to properly regulate blood sugar levels. While it usually resolves after birth, it increases the risk of preeclampsia, preterm birth, and having a large baby (macrosomia), which can complicate delivery and increase birth injury risks such as shoulder dystocia.
