Oxygen deprivation, also called asphyxia or hypoxia, is a state where the baby receives insufficient oxygen before, during, or after birth. This is a critical medical emergency that can lead to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), causing permanent brain damage, cerebral palsy, or death if not managed immediately. Oxygen deprivation can result from various complications during labor and delivery, including umbilical cord problems, placental abruption, or prolonged labor, and requires prompt recognition and intervention.
