Premature birth, also called preterm birth, is birth that occurs before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy. Premature infants may have immature body systems, including the brain and lungs, which places them at higher risk for complications such as cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and vision or hearing problems. The earlier a baby is born, the greater the risk of serious health complications, and many premature babies require extended stays in the NICU for specialized care and monitoring.
